River Teifi latest fishing conditions, levels and reports. Updated regularly by Harry Jackson of Teifi River Guides.
I am sure that many of you have read or heard about the the pollution incident that happened in the upper reaches of the river, nr Tregaron, during December 2016. It was a devastating and lethal incident that should never have happened nor be allowed to have happened. The source is thought to have been an anaerobic digester (a method used for concentrating animal waste and converting it into a usable chemical elsewhere.)
Details of how much of this toxic waste escaped from the tank is not yet known and investigations are still ongoing, however I believe it was a substantial amount killing hundreds of Salmon, Sewin and Brown Trout.
We believe that at least six miles of the upper river has been destroyed. Beats above Lampeter have been checked showing signs of fish life. We can say that down stream of Lampeter the fish have escaped unscathed.
Very little can be done after the event. my only hope is that the incident itself highlights the environmental importance that the disposal of slurry and other such toxic waste created by farming are done so responsibly at each stage.
I am pleased to say that the above has been a topic conversation amongst a number of farmers known to me personally.
Will keep you updated
